obwohl die letzte kompakt-offerte aus dem studio der legendären russichen synthesizeristen scsi-9 schon eine weile zurückliegt – 2008, um genau zu sein, mit dem album “easy as down” (kompakt cd 068) -, hat co-gründer und techno/house-virtuose anton kubikov nicht auf der faulen haut geaalt, sondern sein eigenes label pro-tez records gepflegt – und eine karriere als solo-künstler mit klarem drang zur verdubbten tonlandschaft und ambient-musik in die wege geleitet. whatness ist seine erste solo-album-veröffentlichung unter eigenem namen und webt einen luftigen wie schillernden klangteppich, der genau da weitermacht, wo kubikovs exzellente beiträge zu unserer pop ambient compilation-reihe aufgehört haben. anton kubikovs besonderes ohr für ambientes und tonale räume war schon immer integraler bestandteil von scsi-9s musikalischer dna, die gerne zwischen fokussierter tanzathletik und ausufernden melodieräumen changiert – doch erst als solo-künstler macht er sich daran, diese räume wirklich auszuloten und geheimnisvollen klangspuren in neblige, hallende gegenden zu folgen. kubikovs gastspiele auf mehreren ausgaben unserer pop ambient-serie deuteten auf ein vielverprechendes neues projekt im talentpool hin – ein versprechen, das mit dem mitreissenden klangbad von whatness mehr als erfüllt wird.

der französische trackbastler sebastien bouchet ist bekannt für seinen hang zu tiefem, exzentrischem techno und house – und seinen ruf nur selten etwas zu veröffentlichen. seine rückkehr zu kompakt unter neuem projektnamen sebastopol ist deshalb ein ganz besonderer leckerbissen, datiert doch sein letzter eintrag ins grosse kompakt-buch ins jahr 2014 zurück, als er die hochgelobte speicher 77 (kompakt extra 77) ins rennen schickte.
dementsprechend sind die erwartungen hoch und zahlreich, werden allerdings mehr als befriedigt mit der neuesten scheibe gahalowood welche bouchets talent für ungewöhnliche ohrwürmer mit einem kraftvollen drang zum tanzflur synchronisiert.

titeltrack gahalowood bringt den fluss schnell ins rollen, dank einer stoischen kickdrum und drängelnden synthies – aber es sind diese vocals, die einen wirklich in den strudel hineinziehen und von atmosphärischen tupfern zur lautstark gehauchten hymne ausarten, getränkt mit all der matten romantik einer 80er welleband.
auf der kehrseite scheint flash pool ähnlich investiert in die menschliche stimmgewaltlosigkeit und mischt das intime groovegeflüster in den vordergrund – nimmt dann aber eine unerwartete wendung in psychedelisches kuhglockenterritorium, wo wilde bleeps auf den wiesen umherstromern und hooklines auf den seltsamsten bäumen wachsen. zum abschluss präsentiert heaven einen vergleichsweise geradlinigen house-bogen, kommt aber nicht umhin einiges an vertrippter güte zu erschnüffeln – in jedem fall dürfte der durst aufs klangabenteuer hier vollstens gestillt werden.

christian nielsen is a musician you would not immediately expect to see behind the speicher / kompakt extra crest. we love to surprise your ears and have enjoyed for some time his outsider approach to any genre he chooses to tackle. in particular with “hard times” – a prime-time melodic monster that bridges the right transitions. right when you need them to. berlin via belgium techno juggernaut locked groove has been on our radar for ages thanks to releases on hotflush and afterlife. “dawn” is one of those magical tunes that loop along but evolves with every listen. you hold us to it that we think it could be the best set opener 2017 will have to offer. intricate drums balance well with lush minimalistic melodies. our speicher series rapidly heads towards 100. where it goes, only we know - so savour the flavour while it lasts.

following their much-acclaimed surprise debut album vermont from 2014, motor city drum ensembles danilo plessow and innervisions marcus worgull reunite for more synth daydreaming on the suitably titled ii. the new outing continues where the first full-length left off, strolling further down the luminous and undulating path that the duo turned into, influenced in equal measures by kosmische, krautrock, minimal wave and synth soundtracks.

als weiterer höhepunkt eines unglaublichen laufs, der letztes jahr mit sicko (kompakt 322) und you are a blade (kompakt 343) begann, präsentiert der uk-produzent und langjährige kompakt-vertraute rex the dog zwei brandneue knaller auf teufelsberg, ein perfekter spagat zwischen dem kraftvollen, melodieverliebten techno seiner früheren produktionen und dem rohen, muskulösen stil mit analogem biss, welcher seinen aktuellen output charakterisiert. letzteres sollte nicht verwundern, ist rex doch zunehmend in do-it-yourself synthesizer-design abgetaucht und baut inzwischen modulare gerätschaften für seine studio und bühnenbelange selbst. das titelstück teufelsberg startet schlank und sehnig, dreht mit treibenden beats und einer simplen, aber schwer effektiven bassline schnell den hahn auf, der wahre star ist hier jedoch eine mitreissende melodie, die wie in zeitlupe über die gesamte lauflänge des tracks explodiert, dank ungemein malerischer synthesizerklänge die auch vor radikalen breaks nicht zurückschrecken. währenddessen keilt die rückseite mit einer ordentlichen portion rave auf dem industrial-beeinflussten shortwave aus erneut ein unermüdlicher techno-schieber zur besten sendezeit, der sowohl monumental als auch verspielt kann.

hart auf den fersen von moonbuilding 2703 ad remixes / sin in space pt. 1 (kompakt 336) erhält das pionierduo the orb nun eine fürstliche remix-behandlung von prins thomas: für alpine diskomiks / sin in space pt. 2 hat der norwegische disko-könig den track „alpine evening“ von the orbs aktuellem release alpine (kompakt 339) neu interpretiert und mit seiner typischen tanzflurmagie versehen – der psychedelische klopfer wandelt sich unter seiner hand zur gutgeölten, hochenergetischen tanzmaschine. es ist nicht das erste mal, dass prins thomas material von kompakt-künstlern in die mangel nimmt (man denke an seine exzellente arbeit mit justus köhncke und vermont), doch diese neufassungen zählen sicherlich zu seinen besten (und treibendsten) remixen bisher. der zentrale diskomiks erhält unterstützung durch zwei versionen auf der rückseite: das simpler tool for dj fools kratzt das streicherjucken, während der short yoga break die beats zur erweiterten atmosphärischen vertiefung ganz rausnimmt – eine perfekte manier um dieses release abzurunden.

ambivalent ist das pseudonym von dj und produzent kevin mchugh: ursprünglich aus den usa stammend, hat er seine zelte inzwischen in berlin aufgeschlagen wo er weiter an seiner kunst feilt, schlanker und kraftvoller techno für bewegungsfreudiges publikum. entsprechend haben ambivalent-releases ihren weg zu labelklassikern wie etwa ovum oder cocoon recordings gefunden. cocoon zeichnet auch für seine gefeierte daylights-single verantwortlich, eine erweiterung der dank seines la-4a analogprojekts besonders erfolgreichen letzten monate. jetzt präsentiert er mit speicher 92 einen mehr als passenden beitrag zur traditionsserie. whyou ist eine durchaus muskulöse angelegenheit, dank potenter moog-riffs und einer hungrigen tr 909. die rückseite glänzt mit einem hypnotisch-energetischen, remix von kompakt-boss michael mayer ein persönlicher held von mchugh seit mindestens 15 jahren. ein echter doppel-headliner, der die spreu vom weizen trennt.

weval beziehen ihre inspiration nicht aus einem einzelnen musikalischen genre, sondern eher aus einer akkumulation von musik, die sie inspiriert. die ergebnisse zeichnet eine beeindruckend kohärente vision aus, aufnahmen wie das dramatische the battle, der bassknurrer i dont need it oder die trip-saga madness teilen diesselbe dna aus schwungvoller nostalgie, einer schwäche für immersive klangschnitzerei und einer gewissen delle im groove. sie nähren sich auch aus zutiefst persönlichen erfahrungen und stimmungen, wie zum beispiel bei der eindringlichen elektronischen ballade youre mine, dem vorsichtig geschichteten, polaroid-gefärbten just in case oder dem wunderschön gesungenen schlussakt years to build. und manchmal ist es nur ein altes, verstimmtes klavier, das im flur herumsteht: immer wenn ich dran vorbei lief, musste ich darauf herumklimpern, erklärt merijn, also wurde es ein zentraler bestandteil von you made it (part i). kein zweifel: dies ist wevals stärkstes und organischstes material bisher, was durchaus was bedeutet, wenn man das talent bedenkt welches bereits in schmalen, doch gewichtigen portfolio der band steckt.
